N-340 to Barcelona. Medol Service Area.

Much of the stone used in the Roman buildings of Tarragona was extracted from this place, the Medol quarry. An estimated 50,000 cubic metres of rock was extracted from here and today we can see it scattered throughout the city. This quarry is 100 metres long and 50 metres wide. If we stand by the Medol needle (14 meters high) and look up, we will appreciate the depth we find ourselves in. Everything above our heads was rock that the Romans slowly dug out. It is definitely a place that will fills us with a feeling of peace and relaxation, accentuated by the singing of birds and the nature surrounding us. We are in the bowels of a mountain.
