Created by one of the great Catalan architects Josep Maria Jujol, this theatre is an example of how modernism revolutionised aesthetic and technical aspects of architecture. The Metropol Theatre is itself a maritime allegory with drawings of waves, fish and ship and keel shapes. A creation remembering religious symbolism, with several “Ms” in honour of the Virgin Mary, to which Jujol was devoted. The skeleton of the building was for the artist, a ship that led the faithful (the audience) from the interior to the seas of salvation, which is why the interior decoration reminds the visitors of this idea, with rails similar to those found in ships, handrails shaped like net knitting needles, fish and keels that transports us to the bottom of the sea. It is without doubt a construction ahead of its time.
